Apple fritters, they're basically fried apple in light batter. Yes, that's a good point, I thought it was odd to have gravy on sweet stuff too, and they had little individual apple pies. You'd think they'd have baked vegetables for their mains or something, or a nice ratatouille. Maybe it was sweet gravy, like Vianne makes in "Chocolat"?
Actually it was a sort of savoury chocolate concoction, not actually sweet but it would go with sweet or savoury things, they had it at the dinner for Judi Dench's character. You've seen "Chocolat", right? If not, watch it some time, it's a lovely film.
